Ineos identify top Dan Ashworth replacement who called Man United 'amazing' in 2019

Manchester United’s boardroom structure could be reshuffled again after Dan Ashworth’s shock exit.

It finally seemed as though Manchester United had an elite structure in place under Sir Jim Ratcliffe, but the British billionaire threw a curve ball by deciding to part ways with Dan Ashworth.

The former Newcastle and Brighton director had spent just five months in the job and was viewed as a world-class appointment, but it seems there has been a fracture within United’s hierarchy.

Jason Wilcox and Christopher Vivell could step up into enhanced roles to assume some of Ashworth’s responsibilities, while it has not been ruled out that Ineos could hire a new sporting director.

According to reports, Ashworth had concerns over Ruben Amorim. If United do hire a new sporting director, they will need someone aligned with the Portuguese head coach.

Man United interested in Luis Campos as sporting director

Since Ashworth’s exit, United have been linked to Atletico Madrid’s Andrea Berta as a potential replacement as sporting director.

However, iNews now claims that United are in pursuit of Paris Saint-Germain’s Luis Campos, who is also wanted by Premier League rivals Arsenal.

The report claims that Campos is at the top of United’s wishlist if they plan on bringing another sporting director to the club.

While Ashworth was hesitant over Amorim’s appointment, there is hope that Campos would be a better fit as a fellow Portuguese.

Campos joined PSG in 2022 and has helped shift their transfer focus away from Galactico signings and more toward upcoming young talent – something United are wanting to replicate.

Luis Campos hailed Man United as ‘amazing’ in 2019

Rewind to 2019 and United were on the hunt for a sporting director – a role that the club had failed to fill under the Glazers.

Ed Woodward was largely in control of football operations and transfers, but United had been strongly linked to Campos who was the sporting director of Lille at the time.

When asked about potentially joining the Red Devils, Campos hailed United as an “amazing club”.

Speaking to Sky Sports, he said: “Manchester United is an amazing club with an amazing story; it’s difficult to understand what has happened.

“Of course I believe I could help Manchester United. I want to work with a big club one day. I am happy here – so only a special situation will make me change a project.”
