Sao Paulo are considering sending Jamal Lewis back to Newcastle United in January, their director of football has revealed.
Eyebrows were raised when the 26-year-old agreed to spend the final year of his Newcastle contract on loan in Brazil. Lewis was on loan at Watford last season after falling out of favour at St James’ Park.
After failing to secure a domestic move during the summer transfer window, Lewis jumped at the opportunity to go to South America but after just six appearances, an ankle injury is threatening to cut his spell short.

The left-back has been ruled out of the last five matches. Sao Paulo sporting director Carlos Belmonte has admitted the problem may require surgery.
Should that be the case then it has already been that Lewis will return to Tyneside in the New Year.
“Jamal might not be [staying at Sao Paulo],” Belmonte told UOL. “We have a clause in his contract – Newcastle could call him up at the start of the season, and we could return him. Our relationship with Newcastle is exceptional.
“He’s got an ankle problem and we’re making an assessment. It’s already been agreed with Newcastle [that] if he has to have surgery, he’ll go back for the surgery and the recovery process in England.”
Lewis joined Newcastle from Norwich City in 2020 for £15million and has gone on to make 36 appearances. He featured for Howe’s side in pre-season but last made a competitive appearance on the final day of the 2022-23 campaign as a substitute away to Chelsea.
The player is likely to played his final game in black and white with his contract understood to expire in June 2025.
