Arsenal Women continued their impressive form in the Women’s Super League (WSL) with a commanding 4-0 victory over Aston Villa at the Emirates Stadium on Sunday. Interim manager Renée Slegers expressed her delight with the performance, as the Gunners extended their unbeaten streak to eight matches and recorded their third consecutive clean sheet in the league.

Goals from Alessia Russo (2), Frida Maanum, and substitute Stina Blackstenius sealed the emphatic win, marking another step in Arsenal’s resurgence since the departure of former manager Jonas Eidevall. The result keeps Arsenal firmly in the hunt at the top of the WSL standings.

Slegers was particularly pleased with her team’s adaptability and clinical finishing.

“I’m very happy with the result,” Slegers said after the game. “We only had two training days back from international camp, and we made some changes, including a new midfield. Players are coming back and getting minutes, so overall, I’m very happy with all the roles being played within the team.”

💬 “They bring us so much, the fans. I’m happy we could deliver the goals and the clean sheet.”

Although Aston Villa shared possession with the Gunners, Arsenal’s defence remained resolute.

“We didn’t allow them anything in the first half,” Slegers continued. “In the second half, they had a couple of wide crosses and shots, but Steph [Catley] and Lotte [Wubben-Moy] made excellent blocks. We were clinical in the final third, and even though there’s always room to improve, leaving here with a 4-0 win is very professional.”

The match was played in front of nearly 30,000 supporters, whose energy helped lift the team through challenging weather conditions.

“I’m happy we could deliver the goals, the clean sheet, the work rate, and hopefully some nice moments for the fans,” Slegers said. “They bring us so much. Hearing ‘North London Forever’ before the game was amazing.”

Attention now turns to the UEFA Women’s Champions League, as Arsenal prepare to face Norwegian side Vålerenga in a midweek clash.

“We need to recover quickly,” Slegers stated. “The next game comes fast, and it will be a totally different challenge. It’s going to be cold in Norway, and Vålerenga are tough to beat. We need to do everything we can to prepare well for Thursday.”

Arsenal will look to continue their fine form on both domestic and European fronts as they strive for success under Slegers’ leadership.
