Ruben Amorim has a chance to break Manchester United record by matching David Moyes feat

Ruben Amorim has a chance of recording a Manchester United first on Thursday evening when his side take on Czech side Viktoria Plzen at the Doosan Arena.

Amorim will take his side to Czechia looking to bounce back from a disappointing week that yielded back-to-back defeats against Arsenal and Nottingham Forest in the Premier League.

United's attention now turns towards the Europa League as they look to take the next step towards qualifying for the knockout stages.

Amorim's side head into the clash in 12th place in the Europa League table, with nine points from their opening five matches. Plzen are also on nine points and are one place below United heading into the game. Both sides know a win could take them into the top eight of the extended league phase, which would guarantee them straight passage into the last 16 if they are still there come the end of the league phase, avoiding an extra knockout match.

The importance of the match is not lost on either side and Amorim can become the first United manager to win away from home against Czech opposition. It will be United's first visit to the country in 20 years, when they were held to a 0-0 draw by Sparta Prague in the 2004/05 Champions League while managed by Sir Alex Ferguson.

Similarly, United remain unbeaten in Europe this season and if Amorim's side can avoid defeat on Thursday, he will be the first manager (albeit with the aid of Erik ten Hag and Ruud van Nistelrooy's previous efforts this term) to oversee the sixth European game of a campaign with United still unbeaten since David Moyes achieved the same feat in 2013/14.

Plzen have lost both of their previous games against an English side, losing 3-0 at home and 4-2 away to Manchester City in the Champions League that same season.

United have drawn with FC Twente, Porto and Fenerbahce, and beaten PAOK and Bodo/Glimt so far in the competition, while Plzen have beaten Real Sociedad and Dynamo Kyiv, and held PAOK, Ludogorets and Eintracht Frankfurt to draws.
