Russell Martin sack update ahead of Southampton vs Tottenham

Southampton expert and Daily Echo journalist Alfie House has revealed a Russell Martin sack update, ahead of Southampton vs Tottenham this weekend.

Despite the busy festive period, Southampton now have a week to recuperate. For Saints fans, the periods in which the club isn't playing are the blissful periods - So, make the most of being free from stress, friends!

As it stands, Southampton are fresh from having two days off. As revealed by Alfie House on X (formely Twitter), Sunday and Monday were two days off at Staplewood... Definitely needed considering the woeful weekend Southampton had.

However, this was not the bulk of House's update. In fact, there is a Russell Martin sack update which Southampton fans were more eager to hear.

According to Alfie House, Russell Martin is expected to be in charge of Southampton for the upcoming fixture against Tottenham Hotspur. That said, he did claim that he could not confirm 100% for "obvious reasons."

Obviously, nothing is ever 100% for a million reasons.#SaintsFC

So, it is likely to be Russell Martin vs Ange Postecoglou on the touchline at St Marys Stadium this weekend. Therefore, do not be entirely surprised if both sets of supporters struggle to bring any form of atmosphere, considering both managers are walking on a thin tightrope.

Earlier today, we reported that Postecoglou's future at Tottenham depends on Spurs' two games this week, against Rangers and Southampton. Therefore, we could definitely see another "El Sackico" at St Marys this weekend, after Julen Lopetegui won his El Sackico at London Stadium last night.

For Southampton, Russell Martin is a polarising figure. On the one hand, he is an extremely likeable character with a great personality, one that the Southampton players clearly resonate with.

On the other hand, he is incredibly stubborn tactically - If something isn't working, which it isn't, Martin struggles to swallow his pride and change it.

That said, the owners haven't put any pressure on Martin as it stands. At the moment, Martin is visibly dejected, so let's see if the results continue to play out as they have been.
