“It’s always the same people responsible” - Tottenham star Cristian Romero aims dig at Spurs hierarchy after defeat to Chelsea

close

Cristian Romero has criticized the Tottenham Hotspur hierarchy, saying they failed to invest in the north London club following their defeat to Chelsea. The Argentine defender compared Spurs’ competition level with that of Manchester City, Liverpool, and Chelsea and said the club should imitate their Premier League rivals.

Tottenham Hotspur threw away a two-goal lead to lose 3-4 against Chelsea on Sunday, December 8. They are now languishing in the bottom half of the Premier League table with 20 points after 15 matches. While Spurs are still yet to win a trophy since 2008, Cristian Romero has been one of their key players in recent seasons.

Amid Spurs struggles for a trophy, Romero believes the north London club has what it takes to be regular Premier League title contenders. He claimed that lack of investment and poor decisions off the pitch are impeding the club’s progress. He told Telemundo Deportes:

''Manchester City competes every year, you see how Liverpool strengthens its squad, Chelsea strengthens their squad, doesn’t do well, strengthens again, and now they’re seeing results. Those are the things to imitate. You have to realize that something is going wrong, hopefully, they realize it.

''The last few years, it’s always the same: first, the players, then the coaching staff changes, and it’s always the same people responsible. Hopefully, they realize who the true responsible ones are, and we move forward because it’s a beautiful club that, with the structure it has, could easily be competing for the title every year."

Following the defeat to Chelsea, Tottenham Hotspur are now winless in their last four games across competitions and with one victory from their last seven.

Cristian Romero says Tottenham players are very happy with Ange Postecoglou

In another report, Romero said he and his teammates at Tottenham are happy with Ange Postecoglou. The Argentine defender claimed that the Australian manager is a ‘great coach’ and that the players should be the first to be criticized amid a poor run of form.

Postecoglou, who joined Tottenham in 2023, is yet to end the club’s trophy drought. He finished in the fifth position on the EPL table in his debut season and is currently in eleventh position on the table this term. Despite the setback, Romero still reckons that the Australian manager is a good coach. He told Tele Mundo (via BBC):

"He's a great coach. We saw it in the first season. In this second one we've suffered a lot of injuries. Players are the first one to be criticized, then if we lose 10 games, the staff can be changed, but nobody talks about what is actually happening. We are very happy with this staff, me and my colleagues. We love how they work and the football they try to play. We'll try to move on quickly."

Tottenham Hotspur will next be in action against Rangers in the Europa League on Thursday, December 12.
