Pat Nevin has suggested that a move to take Jarrad Branthwaite from Everton could be the “final piece of the jigsaw” at Chelsea.

The 22-year-old has consistently been linked with a Goodison Park exit, with the likes of Manchester United and Real Madrid having been touted with a move the Toffees’ star centre-back.

Ex-Chelsea winger Nevin, now a prominent BBC pundit, suggested his former employers as a potential landing spot should Everton decide to cash in.

Writing for the BBC Football Extra e-mail newsletter in quotes reported by the Chelsea Chronicle (10 December), he opined: “Put simply, there are still weaknesses [at Chelsea] and these tend to be found out at the top level. The central defensive partnership, whoever they use, isn’t close to the level that Arsenal and Liverpool have and you could say the same about the goalkeeper.

“I just wonder if Jarrad Branthwaite could be prised from my beloved Everton, would this be close to the final piece of the jigsaw?”

Jarrad Branthwaite could leave Everton for Chelsea

It’s no secret how good of a player Branthwaite is and given he is only 22-years-old, there must still be plenty to come from him, which is why he is being sought after by many of the top clubs.

In an ideal world, the Blues would love to keep their man for as long as possible but he also gives the Toffees a good chance to cash in and make some money to re-invest in the squad which could be a difference for them going forward.

If Branthwaite does go then it would have to be to one of the really elite clubs. With Man United struggling, Chelsea would potentially be a better option but would he be better served just waiting to see if anything comes of Real Madrid’s interest?

Moreover, you would have to question whether regular football would be easy to come by at Stamford Bridge given the plethora of centre-back options they have.

The reality of the situation is that Everton are likely going to have to cash in on their prized asset at some point but the timing, fee, and future incentives all have to be right. Otherwise, the fact he has a contract until 2027 means there is no rush to make a decision.
