Premier League make huge Anthony Taylor decision after Tottenham vs Chelsea controversy

The Premier League have made a huge decision over referee Anthony Taylor this weekend.

Taylor was at the centre of controversy during Chelsea's 4-3 win over Tottenham on Sunday. Spurs were left fuming after Blues star Moises Caicedo avoided a red card before going on to win a game-levelling penalty in Chelsea's' comeback win.

The Ecuadorian went in high on Pape Matar Sarr during the first half at the Tottenham Hotspur Stadium, with the VAR (Video Assistant Referee) deeming it not worthy of a sending-off.

"VAR checked for a potential red card following a challenge by Caicedo on Sarr and confirmed the referee’s call of no serious foul play," the Premier League Match Centre account posted on X, formerly known as Twitter.

The other contentious incident during the first period saw Spurs winger Dejan Kulusevski escaping punishment after catching Romeo Lavia with a high arm. According to Sky Sports, it was deemed accidental, allowing the Swede to stay on the field.

And now Taylor will referee Sunday's Manchester derby at the Etihad Stadium between Manchester City and Manchester United. Gary Beswick and Adam Nunn will be assistant officials, Tim Robinson will act as fourth official, and the VAR officials will be Stuart Atwell and Simon Bennett.

Meanwhile, Peter Banks will referee Chelsea's clash against Brentford on Sunday, while Darren England will referee Spurs' trip to Southampton.

When asked about Taylor's decision not to award Caicedo a red card on Sunday, Tottenham boss Ange Postecoglou said: “I think it’s kind of where we’re at with the current state of football, where people are just frozen to make big decisions.

“I think referees don’t want to make them because they’ll go to VAR and VAR doesn’t want to intervene, so you’re kind of left in no man’s land. There’s a couple of decisions I thought today that definitely went against us.

“I thought the linesman put his flag up bizarrely for Deki when he was through; I don’t know what for. Those are things that are out of our control. We can’t do anything about that. Hopefully, the powers that be work that out.”
