Everton fan, 15, who travelled halfway round for postponed game meets players

Granada Reports journalist Ellis Nordhoff caught up with Everton fan Mackenzie Kinsella

A 'heartbroken' Everton fan who spent more than £1,000 and travelled from the other side of the world to go to his first Merseyside derby was given a personal invite to meet Everton players after the game was postponed.

Mackenzie Kinsella, 15, from Sydney, Australia has been a huge blue from birth thanks to his Scouse mum Rita.

The teenager has been to Goodison Park several times before, but has never got the chance to see the blues face Liverpool in one of England’s most famous fixtures.

But on Saturday, 7 December, Mackenzie woke up to the news that the game had been postponed as Storm Darragh caused heavy winds in the region.

Reacting to the game being called off, Mackenzie said: “It was a shame and I would have liked to have gone. The reason I came in the first place was to be part of history.

"The realisation that I wasn't going to be able to do that was a shame, but at the same time, if you watch the news, there's people who have lost their houses and cars so in the grand scheme of things it is okay."

Everton Captain Séamus Coleman and other players met with Mackenzie at Goodison, making sure the young fan's 10,000-mile trip was not in vain.

"It was surreal to be honest. Everton legends being here so long, it was amazing to hear from them and I wasn't expecting this to happen," Mackenzie said.

"I just met him [Séamus Coleman] and he is a great guy."

Everton Captain Séamus Coleman said: "He's an Evertonian and he travelled a long way. Obviously he is very excited this morning, but i'm sure Saturday morning he was very disappointed.

"But I think the club in general and the media in England as a whole have captured his story and made a nice time of him.

"He's getting down here on the training ground which is great and he is going to meet all the players so we really appreciate his support and it is important that we understand the situation he is in."

Everton player James Tarkowski said: "It shows what it means to people. You know we play sometimes without always realising what it means for fans so to see someone that has travelled halfway around the world to watch us.

"I am gutted for him but hopefully we can get him over to the game on the weekend."

It’s not yet known when the Goodison fixture will be arranged. There is a hectic Christmas schedule ahead, with both team’s participation in the FA Cup next month and Liverpool's games in the League Cup and Champions Leagues complicating matters.

However, Mackenzie is still hopeful he will be able to see the game. He said: “It's not 'think', I know I am going to be at the rearranged fixture. I'll find a way to make that happen."

Mackenzie has had a great time in Merseyside despite the cancellations. He went to the Everton game on Wednesday night. They won 4-0 against Wolves, who are the team his midlands-born dad supports.
