The UEFA Champions League returns this week for matchday six of the newly-reformatted league stage.
Liverpool head into this week’s fixtures leading the standings, with the Reds the only side to have taken maximum points from their five games played. Arsenal also sit in the coveted top eight. The teams in those positions after eight games will progress automatically into the Round of 16. Sides between ninth and 24th – where Aston Villa and Manchester City currently find themselves – will face off in a play-off to join the top eight in the last 16.
The headline fixtures of matchday six include a meeting between the German and Italian champions, as Bayer Leverkusen host Inter Milan. There’s also a rematch of the UEFA Super Cup final as Real Madrid, currently clinging to a playoff place, travel to Atalanta. The latter have had a brilliant start to the season and currently lead the Serie A title race.
Manchester City face Juventus, after also being drawn together in next summer’s Club World Cup group stage last week.
Unlike previous years, there are no Europa League places for those that miss the qualification cut.
