The Patriots wouldn’t move on from kicker Joey Slye after he missed a near-impossible attempt a couple of weeks back, right?
No, they wouldn’t.
New England is bringing in some competition, however, as NFL Media’s Mike Garafolo reported on Tuesday, the club is expected to sign kicker John Parker Romo to the practice squad.
Romo isn’t a household name by any means, but he did have a decent stretch for the Minnesota Vikings, connecting on 11-of-12 field goals and 7-of-8 extra points before being cut following the return of kicker Will Reichard. The Patriots are just the latest stop for the 27-year-old, who previously had stints with the New Orleans Saints, Detroit Lions, Chicago Bears and the XFL’s San Antonio Brahmas.
Slye, on the other hand, has been good (if not unspectacular) this season, connecting on 22-of-28 field goal attempts. The Patriots are smart to make a move, however, as the 28-year-old is scheduled to hit free agency following the season, and the capacity for an upgrade is obviously there.

New England didn’t do anything groundbreaking with the addition, just its due diligence.
