Many Chelsea players received barrages of criticism last year during a difficult season, so now it’s great to see widespread praise for the same individuals that have helped to shift the momentum at Stamford Bridge.
Despite a strong finish to the 2023/24 campaign, Chelsea had a disappointing season last year under Mauricio Pochettino as they finished sixth in the Premier League.
Since Enzo Maresca took charge as the Blues manager in the summer, they’ve quickly built an identity and are winning everybody over with their performances. As a result, they’re currently second in the league table and being spoken about as title challengers.

Ally McCoist hails turnaround in Chelsea duo Enzo Fernandez and Moises Caicedo
TalkSPORT pundit Ally McCoist has admitted that he wasn’t impressed by Chelsea midfielders Enzo Fernandez and Moises Caicedo last season. However, he’s said that both look miles better this season and are impressing in the centre of the park.
McCoist told talkSPORT: (6:12am, 9 December): “The two players I was very critical of last year, the two boys in the middle of the park, Fernandez and Caicedo. What a turnaround in their fortunes… They’ve been excellent.”
Fernandez, 23, is currently enjoying a purple patch of form in front of goal, becoming a genuine goalscoring midfielder. Martin Keown says Chelsea’s Fernandez “looks unrecognisable” with his recent form.
As for Caicedo, the 23-year-old defensive midfielder has started every single league match this season and been so instrumental. Chelsea insiders claim Caicedo is currently undroppable because of his impact in the starting XI this campaign.

In terms of Fernandez and Caicedo, they’re both starting to show why Chelsea splashed out over £100m to sign each of them. The Blues midfield is beginning to look pretty formidable when you throw Romeo Lavia into the mix, too.
Caicedo looks so comfortable in Chelsea’s side now as an all-action midfielder. Blues supporters will know his form started to pick up towards the back end of last season, too.
As for Fernandez, his challenge now is to keep going with this momentum to stay in the best XI.
