The New England Patriots are adding some depth to their kicker position. Free agent John Parker Romo, who was recently released by the Minnesota Vikings, is expected to sign with the team’s practice squad.
NFL Network’s Mike Garafolo was first to report the move.
Romo becomes the second kicker on the Patriots’ payroll, joining active roster member Joey Slye. With no open spots on the practice squad, a follow-up move will be necessary once signing Romo becomes official.
Romo, 27, entered the NFL as an undrafted rookie in 2022. He started off in New Orleans before stints in the XFL as well as Detroit and Chicago. In March, he arrived in Minnesota but was eventually released early in training camp. He re-joined the Vikings in November as an injury replacement for Will Reichard, going 11-of-12 in field goal tries and 7-of-8 on point afters.
Despite his success, Romo was released after Reichard’s return. He did not have to wait long to find a new team after clearing waivers.
In New England, he will now serve as backup behind the aforementioned Joey Slye. Slye, who will become an unrestricted free agent after the season, has made 22 of 28 field goal attempts as well as 17 of 18 extra points.
The Patriots will visit the Arizona Cardinals in Week 15.
