Labour Court Halle rejects dismissal claim of Ghassan Hage

In February 2024, the Max Planck Institute for Social Anthropology in Halle, in agreement with the management of the Max Planck Society, terminated its working relationship with the Lebanese-Australian guest researcher Ghassan Hage. This decision was prompted by views expressed by Hage on social media regarding the Hamas terrorist attack of October 7, 2023, which are incompatible with the Max Planck Society’s core values. Hage subsequently filed a legal challenge with the Labour Court contesting his dismissal. In today’s hearing, the Labour court in Halle rejected Hage‘s dismissal claim, thereby upholding the position of the Max Planck Society.
