Manchester United have been urged to sign England defender Marc Guehi for new Old Trafford boss Ruben Amorim.

Amorim has taken four points from his first four games in charge of the Red Devils since replacing Erik ten Hag.

A morale-boosting 4-0 win over Everton following an opening 1-1 draw with Ipswich Town excited fans but United have since lost to Arsenal and Nottingham Forest, leaving them 13th in the Premier League.

Amorim has admitted it will take time to implement his ideas on the squad but is also expected to use the transfer market to bring in some new players.

The ex-Sporting Lisbon boss already has several centre-backs to choose from but Mikael Silvestre believes his former club United should ‘definitely’ look into signing Guehi.

Crystal Palace captain Guehi has become a regular for England over the past 12 months – featuring heavily at Euro 2024 – and is viewed as one of the best defenders in the Premier League.

Newcastle United tried to bring Guehi to St James’ Park over the summer but the 24-year-old ended up staying at Crystal Palace.

With Palace enduring a difficult season – the Eagles are currently 17th, just four points above the relegation zone – it would not be a surprise if clubs tried to poach Guehi during the January transfer window.

‘Marc Guehi should definitely be on Manchester United’s list as a long-term option in defence,’ four-time Premier League winner Silvestre told BoyleSports.

‘He almost went to Newcastle and is shining at Crystal Palace after proving himself to be one of the best defenders for one of the best nations in the world with England.

‘What he is doing at Palace is proving he can be tested and perform week in and week out. I have been really impressed with his performances and I think he’d fit in really well with Ruben Amorim’s style of play.

‘He is not shy of playing vertical passes and is always alert, he is strong, wins his duels and is good one on one, he’d fit in well at United.’

Discussing Manchester United’s targets for the rest of the season, Silvestre added: ‘The top four is already distant for United and the dynamic has already moved away from those positions being the target, I think fifth or sixth are realistic finishes in the table.

‘The Nottingham Forest game was an unexpected set-back given it was at home and under the new structure, there was more solidity in the first-half against Arsenal but since then they look fragile again.

‘There have been some concerning individual performances from players and you cannot afford that in the Premier League, you get punished.’
