'Tell you what': Ally McCoist urges Liverpool to go and sign 'terrific' £20m forward if Mohamed Salah leaves

Liverpool star Mohamed Salah is rapidly running down his current contract, with a new deal seemingly yet to be agreed upon.

Richard Hughes is leading talks with Salah over a new Liverpool deal, with the winger currently set to leave on a free transfer this summer.

Salah could sign a two-year Liverpool contract, which would be a massive boost to Arne Slot and the Anfield faithful.

The winger has been the standout player for the Reds this season, with Salah on 15 goals and 12 assists in all competitions.

Worryingly, his Liverpool teammates Virgil van Dijk and Trent Alexander-Arnold are in the same contract situation on Merseyside.

Ally McCoist urges Liverpool to sign Jarrod Bowen as Mohamed Salah’s replacement

But Salah could prove to be the biggest loss given his feats this season and indeed during his entire Liverpool career.

If he does leave, however, Ally McCoist believes a suitable replacement could come in the form of West Ham winger Jarrod Bowen.

Having been asked on talkSPORT by Jeff Stelling if Bowen is good enough to play for a top English club, McCoist replied: “That’s a far better question than, is he too good to play for West Ham, right?

“Because that’s a ridiculous question, because the answer to that is no, no he’s not too good to play for West Ham, because West Ham are a very good team and a great club.

“But how I would answer that is, quite simply he is good enough to play every year in the Champions League without doubt in my opinion.

“His talent is shining through, he’s been a wonderful signing from Hull City, he has been absolutely terrific.

“And you and I were speaking last night, if Mo Salah didn’t – and I hope Mo Salah does sign for Liverpool, I genuinely hope he does, and I think he will, I really do think he will, and hope he does – but I tell you what, they could do a lot worse than going and getting somebody like Jarrod Bowen.”

Stelling replied: “Totally,” with McCoist adding: “I mean it would cost them a few quid, and so it should, but my point is he could play at any level I think, terrific footballer.”

How do Mohamed Salah and Jarrod Bowen compare this season?

Bowen joined West Ham from Hull for £20million in January 2020, and exactly like Salah, he has been a revelation for the Hammers.

The England international has been their star man for several seasons now, with Bowen scoring his fifth goal and registering his fourth assist of the season against Wolves on Monday.

He has constantly led by example for the East London club, often digging them out of trouble, much like Salah has done for Liverpool.

Salah has, of course, taken his feats further with the Reds, with the Egyptian on 226 goals and 101 assists from his 370 appearances for the Anfield club.

Bowen meanwhile has tallies of 65 and 43 respectively from his 219 Hammers appearances, endearing himself to West Ham supporters in the process.
