Newcastle United have the richest owners in the world, but their transfer business does not reflect that.
The Magpies have spent a lot of money since PIF became the Newcastle United owners, but their investment has tailed off in 2024.
The year is going to end without any major names arriving at St James’ Park. No one has arrived who improves Eddie Howe’s starting XI, while Elliot Anderson and Yankuba Minteh have been sold.
Newcastle want to sign a winger in January, but it remains to be seen if they will.
That is due to financial reasons, with PSR set to be a problem for the Magpies for the third consecutive transfer window. Geordie Boot Boys have been told that Newcastle need to sell before they buy, which could result in Miguel Almiron leaving the club in January.
The Premier League’s financial rules are holding clubs like Newcastle United back, despite having wealthy owners who want to invest.

Ben Foster asks ‘what is the point’ for Newcastle United
It is incredibly frustrating, and pundit Ben Foster has summed up Newcastle United’s financial situation perfectly on the latest episode of the Football Fill-In podcast on YouTube.
“They are the richest football club in the world and can’t spend any money,” he said.

“What’s the point? What is the point in having all this resource and not being able to actually spend it.
“Surely in the future it is just going to detract from any potential investors coming in and buying Premier League teams and trying to improve it.”
Foster added: “You shouldn’t be able to have it exactly the way it is now, where they’ve got to sell players in order to buy players. That can’t be right, come on.”
Newcastle and Aston Villa are being punished for their ambition
I do not totally agree that clubs should just be able to spend whatever they want. That results in an inflated market and becomes unsustainable.
However, the fact that clubs like Newcastle and Aston Villa are effectively being held back from progressing is ridiculous. Villa have had to sell some major players, and Newcastle fear they will have to do the same in 2025.
Clubs are not being rewarded for their ambition. Newcastle got into the Champions League after smart investment, but have now stalled. Aston Villa look to be going down the same path.
As Foster says, what is the point for PIF? They are limited in how they can help Newcastle, who are preparing for what could be a very quiet January.
Newcastle want to sign Johan Bakayoko, but whether or not a deal is possible remains to be seen.
While the Magpies would love to strengthen their squad, it is very feasible that another transfer window goes by without any major additions.
