James Olley reports for ESPN that Arsenal have added Dan Ashworth to their list of possible candidates to replace Edu Gaspar as sporting director, following Ashworth’s sudden departure from Manchester United.

United have already confirmed Ashworth’s departure, and Olley adds that sources suggest he was involved in a series of disagreements with senior figures at the club.

Yet he still remains highly regarded, and he previously worked alongside Richard Garlick at West Bromwich Albion. The two reportedly had a close working relationship, and Garlick is now the man in charge of Arsenal’s search for Edu’s replacement.

There are no guarantees at this stage, with Olley reporting that Arsenal will continue to follow a diligent process of narrowing down candidates before formally approaching anyone.

Ashworth is evidently now on that list, but there have also been strong links to the likes of Roberto Olabe of Real Sociedad, PSG’s Luis Campos, and Bayer Leverkusen’s Simon Rolfes, among others.

Monaco CEO Thiago Scuro was also initially linked with the Gunners, but subsequent reports suggested he’s out of the race.

Arsenal’s sporting director position is currently vacant, but assistant technical director Jason Ayto has stepped up in the interim period with Garlick supporting him ahead of the January transfer window.

Mikel Arteta, Tim Lewis, and Josh Kroenke will then join Garlick to make the final decision on Edu’s long-term successor.
