The [Portland Trail Blazers](https://www.blazersedge.com) own an 8-16 record over the first 24 games of the 2024-25 NBA season. Losing twice as much as they win is not unexpected. Portland wasn’t slated to contend this year. Their focus is on developing young players, building team culture, and settling out a young, incomplete roster.
Not coincidentally, we are now five days away from December 15th, the date on which players who signed new contracts (not extensions) with teams this summer can be traded. The 15th will mark the unofficial-official opening of the NBA Trade Season, which will last until February 6th, the 2025 [NBA Trade Deadline](http://www.sbnation.com/nba-trade-rumors).
Here’s the question for you today. Obviously the Blazers need to make trades at some point. Their roster is not anywhere near finished form. They won’t retain all of their current players over the long haul. But will they make a major move before this season’s trade deadline?
For our purposes, we’ll define “major” as trading away someone in the top 8-9 positions in the rotation or injured center Robert Williams III. Nobody’s going to blink twice if they move Duop Reath or Justin Minaya for future picks. We’re talking the Jerami Grants, Anfernee Simonses, and Deandre Aytons of the world, or at least someone at or north of the Dalano Banton line.
