As the January transfer window edges closer to opening it is beginning to look like Manchester City will aim big in their hunt for another midfielder. Earlier today Mark Brus reported for CaughtOffside that the world champions have their eyes on making a move for Atalanta midfielder Ederson. Another report from Pete O’Rourke for Football Insider suggests that City may have a trump card up their sleeve in their reported chase for Martin Zubimendi.
Now, a fresh report has emerged that Newcastle is bracing itself for a bid from Manchester City for their captain, Bruno Guimaraes. Based on the three reports listed above it appears that City are aiming to land a quality midfielder to bolster their midfield stocks. That appears to be the best move for the world champions based on their current needs in midfield.
Alex Crook has reported for TalkSport that Newcastle are preparing for a bid for Bruno Guimaraes from Manchester City. Crook further reports that Newcastle are under pressure to sell players to avoid breaching the Premier League’s financial rules. Lastly, Crook adds that Guimaraes has been a long-standing City target.
All indications are that Manchester City are aiming to bring in a top-quality midfielder next month.
Based on the reports listed above it appears that their world champions have set their sights high regarding their chase for a midfielder. Any one of Bruno Guimaraes, Martin Zubimendi or Ederson would be a quality addition to Pep Guardiola’s squad. Each player is a proven commodity and appears capable of immediately stepping into Manchester City’s midfield. There is no doubt that Pep Guardiola’s squad could do with another midfielder or possibly two. But judging by the players linked with a potential move to the Etihad, Manchester City will be aiming to buy a top-quality midfielder.
In my view, that is a sound strategy from the world champions. They are in desperate need of a midfielder who can make an immediate impact. As it stands currently, signing a younger player with potential is too risky a move for Manchester City to contemplate. There is a rebuild coming to Pep Guardiola’s squad but moving for a younger midfielder is likely a move best left for the summer transfer window.
It appears that Manchester City are aiming to bring in a quality midfielder next month. After standing still in the market last summer it does look like the world champions will make a mark on the January transfer window. Who they bid for or potentially sign is now a story to watch develop over the coming weeks.
