Former Liverpool midfielder Naby Keita has been handed a career lifeline after it was confirmed he had joined Ferencvaros.

Keita, who moved to Liverpool in 2017 for a whopping £48million from RB Leipzig, managed just 84 Premier League appearances for the Reds. While he was part of the Liverpool side who won the Premier League and Champions League under Jurgen Klopp, it would be fair to say the 29-year-old's career at Anfield was something of a disappointment.

He left Liverpool in the summer of 2023, opting to join Bundesliga side Werder Bremen on a free. However, since returning to Germany, he has made just five appearances for Bremen.

The former Reds star was ousted from Bremen's first team squad last season after refusing to travel on the team bus prior to their match against Bayer Leverkusen in April, with manager Ole Herner telling Keita he should look to find a new club.

"I believe that it's best for both sides to simply look ahead and into the future, to see what good solutions Naby can find for himself and what solutions we can find without him," Herner said.

And now it has been confirmed Keita will join Hungarian side Ferencvaros on-loan in January. "We are pleased to have found a solution, together with Naby and his agent," said Werder Bremen's managing director for sport, Clemens Fritz.

"For us, it was clear that Naby would not play for Werder again. As such, the loan deal is the right move both for us and for him. We wish Naby all the best in Hungary."
