Right now, Tottenham Hotspur are in a very difficult spot, there’s signs of progress under Ange Postecoglou but the club’s position in the Premier League is also not good enough.
After 15 games, Tottenham are 11th in the Premier League and have lost more games than they’ve won in Postecoglou’s second season.
Put bluntly, Postecoglou has failed to deliver his promises he first made when he first joined Spurs in 2023.
Of course, those who back the former Celtic manager feel as if he hasn’t been adequately backed, even if Tottenham have still made significant additions.
And on the eve of the January transfer window, Postecoglou seems in unison with fans in N17 that the club needs to spend.
Jamie Carragher thinks Tottenham have lacked ambition for a long time
That being said, Jamie Carragher shared some strong words about Tottenham’s lack of investment and spending under ENIC and Daniel Levy more than six years ago.
Carragher was talking on Sky Sports and claimed that Spurs weren’t dreaming big, rather they were happy to keep their profits.

The pundit spoke at length, but made his message very clear when discussing the matter alongside Gary Neville.
Speaking in 2018, Carragher said: “Tottenham didn’t recruit in the summer and the team we’re looking at now, I feel as if that was the team I was watching two years ago, which was brilliant, almost won the title.”
“You stand still, you fall behind and I don’t think it’s sustainable, what they spend in the transfer market and getting into the Champions League year in, year out.
“That is not down to the great business sense of the club or the board, that’s to do with the brilliance of [Mauricio] Pochettino and the players that they have at this moment and what he’s actually getting out of them.”
“[Liverpool] are trying to win the league, I think Tottenham are happy with top four and it’s just like, got the money for the top four, that’ll pay for the stadium, pay for this – it’ll mean we don’t have to spend much.
“We don’t need to sign anyone in the summer because we’ve got this good squad with new contracts.”
Dominic Solanke is Daniel Levy’s record signing at Tottenham
Furthermore, Tottenham were also warned about ENIC 24 years ago when they first bought the club.
With no disrespect to Dominic Solanke, it’s remarkable to think that he’s Spurs’ record signing, a club who have sold Gareth Bale and Harry Kane for enormous fees in the past.
Spurs have seemingly always taken a very safe approach in the transfer market, perhaps explaining why they spent most of their funds on young players this summer: Archie Gray, Lucas Bergvall and Wilson Odobert.
A difficult and frustrating situation for the club, and one that currently has no obvious or easy answer.
