Acne is a common skin concern that affects people of all ages, causing everything from occasional breakouts to chronic flare-ups. While it’s often dismissed as a teenage problem, its causes are far more complex. Genetics, hormonal fluctuations, diet, stress, and even the environment can trigger acne, leaving many searching for effective ways to keep it at bay.
With the rise of technology, acne-fighting gadgets have emerged as a game-changer, offering innovative solutions to tackle this persistent issue. These devices target the root causes of acne, such as excess oil production and bacteria, providing a more personalised approach to skincare.
Leading London aesthetic doctor, Dr Joney De Souza, discusses the main causes of acne, the best preventive measures, and how incorporating these high-tech tools into your routine could help you achieve clearer, healthier skin.
Understanding acne: Causes and prevention
Acne is one of the most common skin concerns, affecting people of all ages and skin types.
Dr Souza explains: “Acne occurs when hair follicles become clogged with oil, dead skin cells, and bacteria, leading to inflammation and blemishes. While often associated with hormonal fluctuations during puberty, acne can persist well into adulthood and is influenced by a range of factors, including genetics, lifestyle, and skincare habits.”
Causes of acne
The primary cause of acne is the overproduction of sebum, an oily substance produced by sebaceous glands.
Dr Souza says: “When combined with dead skin cells, sebum can clog pores, creating an environment where grime thrives. This leads to inflammation and the development of pimples. Hormonal changes, particularly increases in androgens, can exacerbate sebum production, making acne common during puberty, pregnancy or menstrual cycles.
“In addition to hormonal fluctuations, lifestyle factors play a significant role in acne development. Diets high in processed sugars, dairy or greasy foods may contribute to inflammation and breakouts.
“Stress is another trigger, as it increases cortisol production, stimulating oil glands. Improper skincare routines. This includes over-cleansing, using harsh products, or failing to remove makeup which can disrupt the skin barrier and worsen acne.”
Ways to avoid acne breakouts
Adopt a consistent skincare routine
Dr Souza recommends using a gentle, non-comedogenic cleanser twice daily to remove excess oil and impurities.

He continues: “It’s important to incorporate ingredients like salicylic acid, which exfoliates within pores to prevent clogs, and benzoyl peroxide, which kills acne-causing bacteria. Hydrating with a lightweight, oil-free moisturiser is essential, as dehydrated skin can overcompensate by producing more oil.”
Protect your barrier
Dr Souza adds: “Avoid over-cleansing or scrubbing aggressively, as this can strip the skin and aggravate breakouts. Alcohol-based products should also be avoided, as they can weaken the skin's protective barrier. Sunscreen is crucial, as UV exposure can worsen post-inflammatory hyperpigmentation and make the skin more susceptible to breakouts”.
Monitor your diet and lifestyle
While there is no one-size-fits-all acne diet, reducing high-glycaemic foods and dairy may help. Drinking plenty of water, managing stress through mindfulness or exercise, and ensuring adequate sleep are all vital for supporting clearer skin.
Consider professional treatments
For persistent or severe acne, Dr Souza advises: “I recommend consulting a dermatologist for prescription treatments such as retinoids or hormonal therapy. In addition, professional treatments like chemical peels, LED light therapy, and microneedling with specialised serums can help manage and prevent acne.”
The role of acne-fighting gadgets
While traditional skincare methods are crucial, acne-fighting gadgets have become an increasingly popular solution in the battle against breakouts.
Dr Souza says: “These high-tech devices target the root causes of acne, providing a more tailored approach to treatment. LED light therapy masks, for example, use blue light to kill acne-causing bacteria, while facial cleansing brushes help exfoliate and deeply cleanse pores. Other gadgets focus on reducing excess oil production or promoting better skin healing.
“Incorporating these devices into your skincare routine can enhance the effectiveness of topical treatments, offering an innovative and non-invasive solution for acne management. By combining professional advice with advanced technology, it’s possible to achieve clearer, healthier skin.”
