Mark Gastineau confronts Brett Favre
ESPN
New York Jets legend Mark Gastineau was grilled Hall of Fame quarterback Brett Favre for taking a dive on a sack that broke Gastineau’s NFL record.
ESPN on Tuesday published a clip from its upcoming 30 for 30 documentary The New York Sack Exchange. In the clip, Gastineau and Favre met at an event when he confronted him about the play that happened nearly 19 years ago.
It started when Favre reached out to shake his hand, but Gastineau didn’t return the gesture.
FAVRE: I thought we met a long time ago. At least, I saw you.
GASTINEAU: Right —
FAVRE: How are you doing?
GASTINEAU: — when you fell down for him. I’m gonna get my sack back. I’m gonna get my sack back, dude.
FAVRE: You’d probably hurt me.
GASTINEAU: Well, I don’t care. You hurt me. You hurt me. You hear me?
FAVRE: Yeah, I hear you.
GASTINEAU: You really hurt me. You hurt me, Brett.
On Jan. 6, 2002, the New York Giants took on the Green Bay Packers in the regular season finale. Giants defensive end Michael Strahan was just one sack away from breaking Gastineau’s single-season record. Toward the end of the game, he finally got the record-breaking sack when he shed a block and ran straight at Favre. Instead of taking a big hit or possibly maneuvering away from Strahan, Favre simply dove to the ground. Strahan was credited for the sack.
“Anybody will tell you Brett Favre took a dive!” Gastineau said in the documentary. “And you know it, she knows it, he knows it, and everybody knows.”
22 years after losing the NFL single-season sack record, Mark Gastineau confronted Brett Favre for ‘taking a dive’ on the record-breaking play.
