Cole Pennington, the son of former first-round NFL Draft pick Chad Pennington, is leaving his father’s alma mater and will enter the transfer portal. Marshall fans were surprised by the decision but they wish him the best at his future destination.

He has two years of eligibility remaining and has not ruled out a return to Huntington, though it seems unlikely.

Pennington just put a wrap on his redshirt sophomore season. The former three-star recruit in the college football recruiting Class of 2022 spent most of the year on the bench and completed only five passes for 57 yards and a touchdown. Even though he started three regular season games and a bowl game in 2023, Tulsa transfer Braylon Braxton beat him out for the starting job during an open competition at fall camp. Head coach Charles Huff also left Marshall for Southern Miss.

As a result of the circumstances, Cole Pennington chose to seek a new opportunity.

The Pennington legacy will live forever in West Virginia but it will not continue on the field.

Chad played 11 years with the Jets and Dolphins after a record-breaking career with the Thundering Herd. He threw for 14,698 yards and 123 touchdowns during four seasons at Marshall with a record of 45-6. Not bad!

Unfortunately, we will not get to see whether Chad’s son, Cole Pennington, could find similar success at his father’s program. The 20-year-old quarterback entered the transfer portal after three up-and-down years. Akron, Ball State, UT Martin and Eastern Kentucky were the only other schools to offer him a scholarship out of high school. It will be curious to see whether three years of experience boosts his stock in addition to his last name. He looks a lot like his dad as a passer and they have similar frames!
