Panthers place rookie RB Jonathon Brooks on injured reserve

The Panthers placed rookie running back Jonathon Brooks on injured reserve Tuesday, the team announced.

Brooks tore the anterior cruciate ligament in his right knee in Sunday’s loss to the Eagles. It’s the same knee he had the same injury last November while in his final season at the University of Texas.

The Panthers signed wide receiver/returner Velus Jones Jr. from the Jaguars’ practice squad in a corresponding move.

Jones, 27, entered the NFL as a third-round pick of the Bears out of the University of Tennessee in 2022. He has averaged 26.7 yards per kickoff return in 27 games in his three seasons in the league.

The Panthers lost returner Raheem Blackshear to a chest injury Sunday.

Carolina also announced it signed defensive tackle Sam Roberts from its practice squad to the 53-player roster and waived veteran defensive end Deshawn Williams from the active roster.

Roberts, a rormer sixth-round pick of the Patriots, signed to the team’s practice squad in November.

The Panthers also swapped out wide receivers on the practice squad, signing veteran Trenton Irwin and releasing Dax Milne.

Irwin has spent parts of the last six seasons with the Bengals and has appeared in 41 games, catching 46 passes for 601 yards with five touchdowns.
