Liverpool coach Arne Slot has praised goalkeeper Alisson Becker after the Brazilian’s brilliant performance against Girona.

The Reds maintained their perfect record in the Champions League this season by beating Girona 1-0 at Estadi Montilivi on Tuesday evening.

A 63rd-minute penalty goal by record-breaker Mohamed Salah made it six victories from six in the league phase for Arne Slot’s side, who continue to top the standings.

Liverpool are already guaranteed a spot in the knockout rounds, and the win now puts them on the brink of a definite top-eight finish, which would see them progress straight to the last 16 and bypass the play-offs.

One of the standout players in the game against Girona was Alisson, who was making his first start for the club since October.

The Brazilian, who equalled Pepe Reina’s clean sheet record for Liverpool in the Champions League on the night, made five saves against Girona, with four of those coming inside the box.

Speaking after the game, Arne Slot noted Alisson’s quality, naming the goalkeeper the best in the world in his position.

What Arne Slot said about Alisson

The Dutchman admitted that Liverpool were not in their best shape on the night and joked that Alisson’s teammates wanted to make sure he was fit.

“I said a bit of a joke that maybe the players wanted to see how fit he really was, so to give him so much work.”

“But, of course, that was not our plan. He showed again today why I said so many times that he’s our first goalkeeper. That has nothing to do with Caoimhin [Kelleher] – he did so, so well.

“But Alisson has been so important for this club for so many years, for his country as well. [He] showed today that he’s probably one of the best, in my opinion the best goalkeeper in the world. And let’s hope he can keep continuing to bring these performances. Let’s hope even more that he can stay fit.”

🇧🇷🧤 No goalkeeper has a higher save percentage (88.89%) or more prevented goals per 90 (0.471) than Alisson in the Top 5 Leagues this season
