Secretary of State Antony J. Blinken spoke today with Qatari Prime Minister and Minister of Foreign Affairs Mohammed bin Abdulrahman Al Thani about the situation in Syria. The Secretary reaffirmed the United States’ support for a Syrian government that is led by Syrians and reiterated that all of Syria’s groups should be able to participate in a meaningful political process. He emphasized the importance of protecting civilians, facilitating the flow of humanitarian assistance, preventing Syria from being used as a base for terrorism or posing a threat to its neighbors, and ensuring that any chemical weapons stockpiles are secured and safely destroyed. The Secretary and the Prime Minister also discussed renewed efforts to reach a ceasefire in Gaza that secures the release of all hostages and reviewed implementation of the cessation of hostilities between Israel and Lebanon, underscoring the need for continued support to the Lebanese Armed Forces.
