Liverpool coach Arne Slot has criticised his side’s performance in the win against Girona on Tuesday.
The Reds maintained their perfect record in the Champions League this season by beating Girona 1-0 at Estadi Montilivi on Tuesday evening.
A 63rd-minute penalty goal by Mohamed Salah made it six victories from six in the league phase for the Anfield club, who sit on top of the standings.
The Reds are already guaranteed a spot in the knockout rounds, and the win now puts them on the brink of a definite top-eight finish, which would see them progress straight to the last 16 and bypass the play-offs.
However, despite maintaining their 100% winning rate in the competition with the narrow win at Girona, Slot was unimpressed by Liverpool’s performance on the night.
What Arne Slot said about Liverpool’s performance vs Girona
Speaking during the post-match press conference, Slot highlighted the good aspects of Liverpool’s game but was very critical of their performance, especially in the first half.
“Yes, Alisson made a lot of saves, but I think if you make highlights of this game, we will all see a few chances that we had as well, which is normal,” he said.
“What is not normal is that we concede so many chances.”
When asked what he didn’t like about Liverpool’s performance, Slot said:
“A lot, but especially two things.
“If you play against a team that has such a good idea about football, knows how to bring the ball out from the back – like some other teams we faced recently, like [Manchester] City or Real Madrid – then you need to be so intense if you want to make it difficult for them.
“But if every time you are waiting a few seconds before you press, and if you do press you are so easily outplayed, then this team can cause you a lot of problems.
“That’s what they’ve shown throughout the whole Champions League campaign, except for [against] PSV Eindhoven away.
“But we have an incredible goalkeeper.”
The other part was every time we lost the ball, we were not aggressive enough, so every time we lost the ball, they could almost every time go all the way to our goal, having a shot or a blocked shot, and then we could attack again.
“Hardly any control at all over the game; maybe the second half was a bit better, but then I am trying to be positive.”
