Bryan King thinks Spurs have Son Heung-min issue amid Manchester United interest

Son Heung-min is coming to the end of his Tottenham contract

There has been some speculation surrounding the future of Tottenham Hotspur star Son Heung-min in recent weeks.

The South Korean international is in the final year of his contract (Transfermarkt) at the White Hart Lane. There was an expectation that the club would offer him a contract extension, but instead, reports suggest that Spurs have decided to activate the one-year option in his deal. Should that happen, it would prolong his stay in North London until 2026.

The 32-year-old has endured an injury-hit campaign, leading to him missing some games. This has disrupted his rhythm and productivity, hampering the Ange Postecoglou-managed side’s form too. He has delivered nine goal contributions in 16 appearances across all competitions thus far.

Yet, Son Heung-min remains a key figure for Ange Postecoglou’s Tottenham. Manchester United view the Spurs skipper as a viable transfer target as they look to snap him up on a free transfer at the end of the season.

Ex-Spurs scout Bryan King feels the North Londoners have created a problem for themselves by not sorting out Son’s future a long time ago. He doesn’t necessarily think the 32-year-old would contemplate joining Man United, although admits there is some uncertainty surrounding his long-term future at the Hotspur Way.

“Tottenham have generated this transfer speculation,” Bryan King exclusively told Tottenham News.

“They should have had his contract extension sorted two months ago. If it had been done two months ago, none of this speculation would have surfaced. Son is settled at Tottenham, his future should have already been resolved, whether it was his short-term or long-term future.

“There is no reason why Son should want to move to United. However, Tottenham have generated a problem by not offering him a new contract, as they should have done already. He has been a loyal servant to the football club, and he is still a good player.

“All of this has certainly caused some uncertainty over him, I’m sure he was expecting his contract to be sorted already. Why the delay?”

Big Ange would want to keep Son at Tottenham beyond 2025.

It appears as if Daniel Levy and Johan Lange are being cautious about handing a lucrative new contract to Son, who will turn 33 in July. The Chuncheon-born ace continues to be one of Tottenham’s most valuable players, despite his advancing years and suggestions of a potential decline.

Losing their skipper on a free transfer in the summer would be a big blow for the Lilywhites. Therefore, the chiefs at the Hotspur Way might have no choice but to offer him a contract extension. Should they take up their one-year option, that doesn’t guarantee Son will remain with the club. It would point towards preserving Son’s value and avoiding losing him on a Bosman.
