After having his leg wrapped under Bengals center Ted Karras on a routine play in the fourth quarter of the Dallas Cowboys’ 27-20 loss on Monday night, further imaging revealed that Cowboys linebacker DeMarvion Overshown tore the ACL, MCL and PCL in his right knee, a source confirmed on Tuesday. ESPN was the first to report.
The rehab process for Overshown is expected to carry well into the 2025 season, putting his third season in the NFL in jeopardy.
“That’s fair, because we are in December,” head coach Mike McCarthy responded when asked if Overshown could miss the entirety of next season. “That’s really realistic.”
The recovery will be Overshown’s second major knee rehab after missing the entirety of his rookie season to a torn ACL he suffered in his other knee in the 2023 preseason. In his return, the Texas product became a high-flying presence in the second level of the Cowboys defense in accounting for 90 total tackles and five sacks.
“D-Mo had an outstanding year,” defensive coordinator Mike Zimmer said. “He’s had a big impact on what we’ve done defensively. It’s a big loss.”
His off-the-field presence has been welcomed as well, as he has drawn rave reviews for his locker room positivity. While that won’t go away entirely, not having him around in the building every day will be noticeable.
“DeMarvion is getting ready for a big surgery,” McCarthy said. “Obviously, his football and physical talent speaks for itself but he’s such a bright light. He has such an infectious personality. He has a long road of rehab in front of him, he’ll be loved and supported all the way.”
It’s expected that Overshown will seek out a second opinion while the swelling goes down in his knee before having surgery in the coming weeks. While this injury is significantly worse than the one he suffered in 2023, the recovery for his first knee injury took 10-to-11 months for him to be fully cleared.
