Rio Ferdinand's Liverpool verdict brings quadruple question back into play

Liverpool squeaked out a 1-0 win on the road over Girona on Tuesday to remain perfect through six UEFA Champions League matches.

With the Reds flying in the Premier League and still alive in both domestic cup competitions, the thought of the quadruple - also mentioned during the 2021/22 season - is alive and well. Former Manchester United defender and current TNT analyst Rio Ferdinand admitted that Liverpool may be favorites for the Champions League.

By the looks of it, the fabled European competition seems like the most difficult one for the Reds to capture. "Form-wise right now, yes, Liverpool have to be favorites (for the Champions League)," Ferdinand admitted on TNT following Liverpool's most recent win.

"Nothing is handed out at this stage. Form-wise, come March and April time it could be very different to now. You have to be a bit patient."

Although Ferdinand didn't mention the quadruple, it's likely to become a talking point if Liverpool's sensational run continues. To achieve that feat, the Reds would need to capture the Premier League title, Champions League, FA Cup, and Carabao Cup in the same season - something that's never been done before in English soccer.

Liverpool currently sit four points ahead of Chelsea in the Premier League with a game in hand. The Reds will look to expand that league back to seven when they host Fulham in the league on Saturday. Liverpool cruised to relatively routine wins over West Ham and Brighton in the third and fourth rounds of the Carabao Cup to set up a quarterfinal clash with Southampton away on December 18.

Russell Martin's Southampton side sit rock bottom of the league table with five points through 15 matches. The Reds will take on League Two outfit Accrington Stanley in the third round of the FA Cup in early January, potentially offering manager Arne Slot a chance to play some of the side's younger players.

With automatic passageway to the Round of 16 all but ensured, Slot can also use Liverpool's two remaining Champions League games to give fringe players an opportunity.

"Liverpool definitely have the make up and all the markings of a team that can be very successful this season," Ferdinand continued. "They just need to ensure they have the form physically and mentally at the back end of the season."
