Manchester United fans are all saying the same thing about Donny van de Beek after Girona vs Liverpool

Former Manchester United midfielder Donny van de Beek took on Liverpool in the Champions League with Girona.

It has been a big few days for Donny van de Beek with Girona, selected as a starter against Real Madrid and then Liverpool.

Both games ended in defeats for his side, with both matches causing individual regret for the Dutch midfielder.

Van de Beek missed a chance at 0-0 against Real, before his side went on to lose 3-0. Unlucky, yes.

Against Liverpool something happened that was a lot more avoidable, and the cause of more regret.

Donny van de Beek mistake vs Liverpool

Donny van de Beek started one game for Manchester United against Liverpool, the 3-2 FA Cup victory over Jurgen Klopp’s side in January 2021.

His start for Girona against Liverpool was less successful, with Mohamed Salah scoring the penalty in a 1-0 victory.

Van de Beek was the unfortunate player who gave the penalty away, fouling Luis Diaz inside his own penalty area.

This was the decisive moment, with Liverpool winning 1-0 and continuing their recent impressive run under Arne Slot.

It was a harsh decision against Van de Beek – but one that summed up how little luck he has had in his career ever since he left Ajax in 2020.

United sold Van de Beek to Girona in the summer for a small fee, after the Dutch midfielder started only six Premier League games in four years at Old Trafford.

Manchester United fans react

This was not how Donny van de Beek drew it up. He would have been envisioning scoring a dramatic winner against Liverpool, to get in the good graces of Manchester United fans who he failed to impress during his time at the club.

Instead, he have away the decisive penalty for his team to lose, and there was a notable reaction from fans.

One supporter wrote harshly: “I see Donny Hide and Seek hasn’t improved much at Girona… another total waste of money!”

Another added: “So glad we sold Donny Van De Beek.”

“Van de Beek is still stealing a living as a footballer I see,”

“Our Donny gave Liverpool a penalty…”, added another frustrated fan.

Another added: “The pressure of playing for Man Utd is what destroys players here, everything that was ignored elsewhere is magnified here.”

And another said sadly: “Ten Hag publicly said that Van De Beek isn’t the same player that he coached from Ajax. He’s washed.”

This season has not been all disastrous for Donny van de Beek, he has scored two goals and provided two assists, and been selected to start 13 games.

But the last two games did not provide the outcomes he wanted, with the challenge of facing Real and Liverpool perhaps coming a little too early into his comeback story.
