KANSAS CITY, Mo. (KCTV) - Just days before the Kansas City Chiefs were set to play the Cleveland Browns, a former Chiefs wideout was released by the Browns.
On Tuesday, the Cleveland Browns waived wide receiver Kadarius Toney, after another game filled with physical -- and mental -- lapses. The move came ahead of a Week 15 game in Cleveland featuring the Chiefs and Browns.
Toney was flagged early in the fourth quarter of the Browns’ 27-14 loss to the Pittsburgh Steelers on Sunday for taunting after making a fair catch. Later in the quarter, Toney muffed a punt with just over 3 minutes remaining in the game, resulting in the Steelers recovering a fumble.
The 25-year-old former first-round pick was signed by the Cleveland Browns on Sept. 9 following his post-preseason release from the Chiefs.
Toney spent most of the 2024 season on the Browns practice squad and was elevated to Cleveland’s active roster three times before this week, when he was signed to the active roster. He had no catches and no yards, but had -4 yards rushing on two attempts.
Now, he’s a free agent again.
His time in Kansas City was largely underwhelming after he was traded to the Chiefs in October 2022 following a disappointing first two seasons with the New York Giants. Toney helped the Chiefs win Super Bowl LVII over the Philadelphia Eagles with a touchdown reception and the longest punt return in Super Bowl history.
He also struggled mightily in 2023 with drops and notoriously lined up offsides to negate a potential go-ahead touchdown score in a loss to the Buffalo Bills. Toney was not on the active roster for any of Kansas City’s playoff games en route to back-to-back titles, and denied being hurt ahead of the AFC Championship Game despite the Chiefs listing him as out due to a hip injury.
Chiefs-Browns will kick off at 12 p.m. CT on Sunday, Dec. 15. It can be watched live on KCTV.
