Arsenal are reportedly making Athletic Bilbao winger Nico Williams a priority signing in the upcoming January transfer window. As the Gunners look to close a six-point gap to Premier League leaders Liverpool, bolstering their attacking depth has become a key focus for manager Mikel Arteta.
Williams, 22, has built a reputation for his exceptional speed, dribbling, and versatility, capable of playing across the front line. Despite modest statistics this season—two goals and five assists in 18 appearances—his standout performances for Spain at Euro 2024, including helping the team clinch the title, have solidified his status as one of Europe’s top emerging talents.

Arteta views Williams as an ideal fit for Arsenal’s tactical setup, offering much-needed competition on the left wing. The Gunners currently depend heavily on Bukayo Saka and Gabriel Martinelli, and Williams could provide a creative spark to reinvigorate their title push.

Williams’ release clause, reportedly set at €55 million, makes him an attainable target. However, Arsenal face competition from several European giants, including Barcelona, Chelsea, Liverpool, and Bayern Munich.
While Williams has expressed loyalty to Athletic Bilbao, his comments in September hinted at openness to a move. “My heart is Bilbao, but nobody knows what will happen in the future. It’s always good when big teams want you, but I always said I wanted to be here. If there was anything, it was from my agent. But I wanted to play in Europe with Bilbao.”
While his addition would enhance Arsenal’s offensive options, his arrival could have implications for the club’s wage structure, as Williams may demand a significant salary. However, his adaptability and talent align with Arteta’s vision, making him a potentially transformative signing for Arsenal’s title ambitions.
