Liverpool player simply has to leave now after brutal Arne Slot decision - Opinion

Liverpool have been doing extremely well in recent weeks, both in the Premier League and the UEFA Champions League.

Mohamed Salah has been scoring goals for fun, while Virgil van Dijk has been a rock at the back.

Ryan Gravenberch has been a revelation under Liverpool head coach Arne Slot, and Trent Alexander-Arnold has been brilliant.

Another player who has stepped up in recent weeks is Caoimhin Kelleher. The Republic of Ireland international goalkeeper has been so good between the posts that Liverpool have not missed Alisson.

Caoimhin Kelleher dropped against Girona

Prior to Liverpool’s UEFA Champions League game against Girona at the Estadi Municipal de Montilivi on Tuesday evening, Alisson had missed 11 games in all competitions with a hamstring injury.

Kelleher stepped in for the Brazil international goalkeeper, and the 26-year-old was superb, making important saves and playing a starring role against Real Madrid.

Yet as soon as Alisson recovered his full fitness, Slot decided to drop Kelleher. Against Girona, the Brazilian was back in goal for Liverpool. Kelleher was relegated to the bench.

Why Kelleher should leave Liverpool

There has been speculation on the future of Kelleher for a while now. With Liverpool also having a deal in place with Valencia over the signing of Giorgi Mamardashvili next summer, the 26-year-old’s future at Anfield looks bleak.

Slot’s decision on Tuesday evening is a brutal and clear indication to Kelleher that he will never be the number one goalkeeper for Liverpool. If the Republic of Ireland international wants to advance his career and play week in and week out, then he will have to leave.

Liverpool are not going to sell Kelleher in the middle of the season, but next summer the 26-year-old simply has to move on. He is too good to stay on the bench even for a club as big as Liverpool.
