Fresh from leaving Manchester United, Dan Ashworth could make a quick return to Premier League employment.

It was announced on Sunday that Ashworth had vacated his sporting director position just five months after joining from Newcastle United. The Red Devils were understood to paid £5million in compensation for Ashworth.

Having bailed on Newcastle after just 20 months before spending less than half-a-year at Old Trafford, the 53-year-old’s reputation has taken a bit of a hit. However, that doesn’t appear to have warned one major top-flight club.

As per ESPN, Arsenal have added Ashworth to their list of potential candidates to replace Edu Gaspar, who resigned as sporting director last month. The Brazilian has agreed a deal in principle to spearhead Nottingham Forest owner Evangelos Marinakis' multi-club group, also including Olympiacos and Rio Ave.

Ashworth has an existing relationship with Arsenal managing director Richard Garlick after the pair worked together at West Bromwich Albion. Garlick was West Brom's legal director-secretary but stepped up to become their sporting and technical director in 2013 following Ashworth's departure to the FA.

Garlick is said to be leading Arsenal's search for a sporting director.

Olabe was part of the negotiations as Newcastle sealed a £63million club-record transfer to sign Alexander Isak in the summer of 2022. The Sweden international has scored 42 goals in 82 appearances for United.
