Former scout confirms Liverpool contract update is imminent

It’s safe to say that the big-money transfer of Virgil van Dijk from Southampton to Liverpool has paid for itself several times over as the Dutchman has established himself as one of the Premier League’s all-time great defenders during his time at Anfield.

He does have his contract running out at the moment, though one insider believes it’s only a matter of time before that changes.

Virgil van Dijk extension expected to be announced before year ends.

Virgil van Dijk extension will be announced before year ends

As revealed exclusively to Football Insider by former Man United and Blackburn chief scout Mick Brown, Liverpool are likely to announce the contract extension of Virgil van Dijk before the tun of the year.

The Liverpool captain remains a linchpin in the Reds defence despite his advancing years and has played every minute of Champions League and Premier League football thus far.

The 33-year-old is, however, in the final year of his £220,000-per-week Liverpool contract—something he currently shares with Mo Salah and Trent Alexander-Arnold.

The sooner, the better

Liverpool have already taken quite the risk by letting the contract situation of Van Dijk, Salah, and Alexander-Arnold go unresolved this close to January.

One can only hope that the club is doing its due diligence before making a decision, but it needs to start getting out of its current predicament at some point and starting with the veteran Dutchman would be the ideal starting point.

The armband should give Van Dijk the edge in terms of getting a contract extension over Salah and Alexander-Arnold. Giving him a short-term deal should be a no-brainer for Liverpool.
