'I knew': Girona manager raves about 'one of the best teams' Liverpool as he makes claim about VAR

Although Liverpool found things tough against Girona, Arne Slot’s side found a way to win – the tale of their excellent season thus far.

Mohamed Salah won the game from the penalty spot, ensuring that Liverpool remained top of the league phase of the Champions League.

Girona were very good at times, but Liverpool enjoyed the return of Alisson Becker in Spain, who was incredibly busy throughout.

Liverpool fans were amazed by Alisson, who is somewhat under pressure to prove why he deserves to immediately displace Caoimhin Kelleher who has also been excellent.

That being said, Girona manager Michel made some interesting comments about Liverpool at full-time.

Girona manager praises Liverpool after Arne Slot’s side top Champions League table

Speaking via Footboom, Michel was first of all asked about the controversial penalty award owing to a foul on Luis Diaz, one that VAR saw it necessary to intervene with.

Thereafter, the Spaniard simply praised Liverpool as a brilliant side, one he ‘knew’ would keep the ball throughout the tie.

Speaking about the penalty initially, Michel said: “When I saw him take off his boot, I immediately thought it was going to be a penalty.

“He stepped on it very lightly, but those situations, in football in the past, would not have been called.

“Now they are, and that’s the reality of VAR. I never liked those situations, but they decided it was a penalty, and so be it. There’s nothing more to do.”

“[The match] was good. Liverpool are one of the best teams in the world, and I knew that often the ball would be theirs.

“We found the open man many times and that gave us the chance to restart. I learn a lot from these games and I’m thinking about what we could have done differently.

“When you play big teams, you see your problems more clearly. I really enjoyed the game. Everyone is proud. The result does not reflect my mood.”

Arne Slot says Liverpool weren’t at ‘normal’ levels vs Girona

Following their latest win in the competition, Rio Ferdinand decided whether Liverpool are favourites to win the Champions League, something they did once under Jurgen Klopp.

Right now, Slot’s side are still going in all competitions and are top of both the Premier League and in Europe.

Slot made an interesting comment about Liverpool immediately after Tuesday’s win, saying his players did something that was ‘not normal’.

Either way, it’s an excellent period for the Reds who have five more fixtures to navigate before the end of the year.
