‘As a team we haven’t’ - Edson Alvarez makes brutally honest admission about West Ham under…

West Ham United sealed a much-needed win against Wolverhampton Wanderers in Monday’s Premier League game at the London Stadium.

The Hammers were coming off a two-game losing run, and they had to avoid defeat to keep manager Julen Lopetegui at the club.

West Ham were not very convincing in the first-half, but they grew into the game and broke the deadlock through Tomas Soucek after 54 minutes.

Matt Doherty restored parity before Jarrod Bowen struck the decisive goal to seal maximum points for the hosts.

Edson Alvarez called the Irons’ win ‘special’, but he also conceded the team hasn’t been where they want to be this season.

He said they need to improve their performances as there is still everything to play for.

The 27-year-old told whufc.com: “As a team we’ve not been where we want to be for a lot of this season, but we always play to win, and Monday was particularly special.

“We just need to back it up now. We have 18 points now and there is still everything to play for. We all need to keep improving, but this result was important and we’ve got a lot of games coming up now where we’ll be hoping for more wins.”

Alvarez joined West Ham in the summer of 2023 for a fee around £35 million.

He enjoyed a stellar debut season in the Premier League, making 31 appearances and scoring a goal.

However, the Mexican has failed to maintain his levels this campaign.

Having received two red cards this term, he has been limited to only seven top-flight starts.

Alvarez was also poor against Wolves on Monday, as he was way too slow and ponderous when in possession of the ball.

The midfielder had just 39 touches and lost possession seven times.

He needs to do better to continue playing for West Ham, otherwise the club may decide to sell him and bring in a better alternative.
