Report: Dan Ashworth could now join Newcastle rival after 'embarrassing' Manchester United exit

Former Newcastle United sporting director Dan Ashworth could fall on his feet after his shock Manchester United exit.

After less than six months in the job, it was announced on Sunday that Dan Ashworth was leaving Manchester United.

The news shocked the world of football, as the Red Devils had committed so much time to taking him away from Newcastle United. Alan Shearer called the Ashworth situation ’embarrassing’, as Sir Jim Ratcliffe continues to make an even bigger mess of Manchester United.

It has been a staggering 12 months for Ashworth, whose reputation has taken a real battering. However, he could now land another major Premier League role in the aftermath of his latest setback.

Arsenal interested in Dan Ashworth

Manchester United are not the only ‘big six’ club looking for a sporting director. Arsenal are too, following the news that Edu would be resigning from his role at the Emirates Stadium.

Now a new candidate is on the market, and the Gunners are already showing an interest.

That is according to ESPN, who report that Dan Ashworth has now joined Arsenal’s list of targets to replace Edu following the news of his Manchester United exit.

ESPN add that Arsenal are yet to formally approach anyone about the role in North London, but Ashworth does already have an ally at the club.

They state that Ashworth previously worked with Richard Garlick at West Brom, who is now Arsenal’s managing director. ESPN claim that the duo had a good working relationship at the Hawthorns, which could potentially result in them being reunited.

How Arsenal appointing Dan Ashworth could impact Newcastle United

Newcastle United fans will be keeping a close eye on Arsenal’s interest in Ashworth, and not just because he is a former Toon employee.

Their next choice of sporting director could have repercussions for the Magpies, as Arsenal continue to be linked with Alexander Isak.

It was recently reported by the Daily Mail that Arsenal appointing Roberto Olabe as sporting director would strengthen their interest in Isak. He was the Real Sociedad transfer chief that signed the Swedish striker in 2019, before selling him to Newcastle in 2022.

Olabe’s arrival could hurt Newcastle, but now Arsenal are also looking at Ashworth.

Of course, he also has history with Isak, having made him Newcastle’s most expensive signing ever two-and-a-half years ago.
