Liverpool could soon deliver Arne Slot his very own James Milner. It would certainly be a massive boost to the Reds' squad.
Liverpool saw out a 1-0 win over Girona on Tuesday evening, becoming the first team (ever) to qualify from the UEFA Champions League league phase. It's been a brilliant run.
EXCLUSIVE: Liverpool ready to splash the cash on Arne Slot's PERFECT no.10
It wasn't a brilliant game, though. Liverpool struggled to control Girona and relied on a penalty to get over the line in Spain.
Still, three points are three points. Happy with that.
This was a noticeable one for another reason, though. Liverpool reportedly like Girona's Miguel Gutierrez, per Caught Offside, and Tuesday was a brilliant chance to watch him up close.
We imagine the Reds loved what they saw.
Liverpool and Miguel Gutierrez
Gutierrez is a left-back. Sort of.
That's principally his position but the Spaniard was everywhere against Liverpool. He started as a left-sided midfielder, in essence, but was covering left-back, watching Dominik Szoboszlai in midfield, pushing up on Trent Alexander-Arnold, and even popping into the centre-forward space.
But that's the kind of player Gutierrez is. Whoscored sums it up well, showing his starting positions this season as 13 at left-back, five in a left wingback/midfield role, and then three more dotted around in various centre-midfield roles.
And that has us thinking of James Milner, which we like to do.
A utility player but one with a recognised position to always fall back into. It's the kind of player that adds so much to a squad, allowing for easy rotation and solid backup when injuries pop up.
Arne Slot doesn't have anyone like that, really - just a couple who can play a second role if needed. Gutierrez, though, would add a lot to the squad.
And he's still only 23. Experience will open up new positions and roles - and could lead to a very Milner-esque importance to the squad.
We'd love to see Liverpool push on for a move. We're very impressed.
