There are only a few days left before the winter transfer window starts, and FC Barcelona have a lot of work to do in this window, even though the Blaugranes are not expected to make any additions to their team.
In January, one of the tasks that the Catalans will be working on with the highest priority will be the registration of Dani Olmo, as the Spaniard was registered with La Liga only for half a season last summer, and that too because of the long-term injury suffered by Andreas Christensen, and his registration will have to be renewed this winter.
Barcelona will be particularly pushed to ensure this registration as they spent €47 million plus variables for him only last summer, and as Mundo Deportivo has noted, if they are unable to get him registered he will be free to leave the Catalan club as a free agent.
This scenario stems from a clause in his contract that allows him to become a free agent if Barcelona cannot register him in any of the transfer windows leading up to the expiration of his contract in 2030.
Last summer, Olmo made the decision to join Barcelona despite the club’s precarious financial situation, understanding that his registration would be delayed. He even missed the first two games of the season as a result of the issue.
The Catalans’ financial woes, compounded by a failure to secure sufficient funds from the sale of Barca Studios, left them with insufficient salary margin to register Olmo.
Even the departure of Ilkay Gündogan was not enough to clear the necessary space, and only the injury to Christensen allowed Barcelona to finally add Olmo to their roster.
With January approaching, Barcelona are now facing a race against time to finalize Olmo’s registration, ensuring that his future at the club remains secure.
Despite the uncertainty, both Barcelona and Olmo are optimistic that a resolution will be found, and the player remains focused on achieving success with the Blaugranas, targeting silverware in the upcoming months.
However, while such a situation is possible in theory, neither the club nor the player believes things will reach such a point. Barcelona are working to get both him and Pau Victor registered, while Olmo himself is focused on winning trophies with the Blaugranes.
