Opinion: Extremely worrying Soucek claim means there's so much more pain ahead for West Ham

West Ham United midfielder Tomas Soucek was our saviour on Monday night.

The 2-1 win over Wolves was a vitally important result for West Ham, and it kept Julen Lopetegui in the job for one more game at least.

The often criticised Tomas Soucek opened the scoring for the Hammers at the London Stadium, after a really well guided looping header found the back of Wolves’ net.

Jamie Carragher absolutely raved about Soucek after the game, labelling the 29-year-old as an ‘absolute revelation’.

The Czech Republic international simply doesn’t get the credit he deserves in my opinion.

He always gives his all for West Ham, and that’s all we ever ask for isn’t it?

In addition to that though, Soucek scores incredibly important goals for us – he has 36 in total to his name for the East London outfit now.

Only six of those goals have come when we’ve been winning.

MORE WEST HAM STORIES

21 have come when West Ham have been level and nine when we’ve been behind in the game, including an incredible 13 match-winning goals!

I’m a huge fan of Soucek, despite having been overly critical of him in the past.

However, his latest declaration left me scratching my head…

Tomas Soucek claim means there’s more pain ahead for West Ham

The Czech Republic international was visibly delighted after our win over Wolves.

Partly because it was a vital three points but also due to the the fact that his teammate Michail Antonio was still recovering in hospital after being involved in a horrific car crash on Saturday.

Thankfully, Antonio is improving by the day.

Unfortunately the same can’t be said about the Hammers’ performances.

And that’s why Soucek’s claim when speaking to WHUFC.com was so concerning in my eyes.

The 29-year-old spoke to reporters after the win over Wolves and made a baffling statement.

He said, “We played well last week [at Leicester City, but lost 3-1], but the most important thing is the points, and we can take the positives from the last two performances. We had a few mistakes in the last game, but today I thought we were quite solid at the back. We’ve now got a week to build on this performance and get ready for another tough game against [AFC] Bournemouth. We can’t over-celebrate as it’s only one victory, but hopefully we can start moving up the table.”

Quite solid at the back? Seriously?

Wolves carved us apart at will throughout the entire game, and it was only their profligate nature in front of goal that saved us from losing the match.

The Black Country outfit had 19 attempts on our goal for crying out loud! How can we have defended solidly as a team whilst letting them cut through us so easily?

It doesn’t make sense. West Ham have big problems defensively, and Tomas Soucek’s failure to see the extent of those issues is hugely concerning.

It means to me that a lot more pain and punishment is lying ahead at the London Stadium unfortunately, until Lopetegui is finally moved on of course.

Soucek needs to get real about the extent of the Hammers’ problems, and fast.
