'Extremely difficult': Christian Pulisic explains why he used to feel under so much pressure at Chelsea

AC Milan winger Christian Pulisic has been speaking about some of the challenges that he faced during his time at Chelsea.

Christian Pulisic is probably playing the best football of his career at this moment in time. In 14 Serie A appearances this season, he has scored five goals and provided four assists.

Last term, the 26-year-old managed to score 12 goals and set up another eight across the 36 league games he played in.

At Chelsea, Pulisic did not really show that kind of form, and the American has been discussing his struggles there in a recent interview. Fikayo Tomori has spoken about his tough spell at Chelsea as well. Like Pulisic, the defender also swapped west London for Milan.

Christian Pulisic on trying to do too much at Chelsea

Pulisic was not a consistent starter when he was at Stamford Bridge. He often found himself in and out of the team.

As a result, when given an opportunity, the USA international felt that he had to do more to try and keep his place in the team.

Speaking to The Athletic, Pulisic said: “It’s not to say it’s easier now [at Milan] than it was with Chelsea, but there was a time in Chelsea where I felt on top of the world and I was playing great and that confidence and that no-fear mentality was easy to have.

“And there was also a time when that was extremely difficult because I wasn’t getting the time. I felt pressure that I needed to do more when I did get on the pitch in some kind of way. Now, I’m in a really good head space where I feel quite confident. I feel a lot of trust from the club in a lot of ways.”

Since joining Milan from Chelsea last summer, ESPN pundit Herculez Gomez thinks Pulisic has evolved into a leader.

What else has Christian Pulisic said about his time at Chelsea?

All in all, how Pulisic views his spell at Chelsea is quite mixed. While the Milan star says he was happy about some things, he has also admitted that it was really tough in west London at times.

He continued: “It was difficult. I became very used to my environment in Chelsea. I learned so much, won a lot and was really happy with how things went in certain ways. But when it’s time for a change, you can feel it with all of your being. If I wanted to reach that next level, this is a step that I had to take.”

In the end, Pulisic’s move to Milan has worked out well for all parties. He is playing regularly and thriving there, which means that the Italian club have a good attacking player on their hands.

As for Chelsea, there is a bit of freshness about them now out wide with the likes of Jadon Sancho, Pedro Neto and Noni Madueke.

Sancho scored in Chelsea’s 4-3 win against Tottenham Hotspur last weekend. Since then, former Chelsea player Craig Burley has described Sancho’s performance as “very good”.
