Alan Shearer has given his verdict on whether Eddie Howe should stay or go as Newcastle United manager.
Pressure has mounted on Eddie Howe as of late, with Newcastle United suffering some poor results on the back of the most recent international break.
Newcastle’s 3-3 draw with Liverpool has proven to be an anomaly, with the Magpies following that up with a shocking defeat away to Brentford. Alan Shearer was worried by what he saw from Newcastle, with Eddie Howe’s players seemingly only turning up for games against the ‘big six’. That is unacceptable.
It is a worrying trend that Howe needs to buck, and now Shearer has given his verdict on whether the former Bournemouth boss is still the right man for the job at St James’ Park.

As part of his latest column for the Athletic, Shearer has backed Howe to continue as Newcastle United manager.
“I don’t have any doubts about Howe still being the right man for Newcastle,” he wrote.
“He can and should lead the team forward. After what he has done, not just pulling the team away from relegation and then straight into the Champions League, but in the way he has set standards and built an identity, he deserves time and patience.

“He needs support, because that identity is blurring. I don’t think there’s the mood — or the money — to make a change.”
Eddie Howe needs support ahead of crucial 2025
I completely agree with Alan Shearer. While credit in the bank is only worth so much, Howe deserves the chance to continue in his role as Newcastle United manager.
He has revitalised the club at a very challenging time, to the point that he is now becoming a victim of his own success.
If Newcastle were to replace Howe, who would they get? Given their current situation with PSR, Newcastle need a manager who is an excellent coach and can make players better. That is pivotal, as Paul Mitchell is going to sign more and more players who are not the finished article.
Newcastle have already got that in Eddie Howe. He is an excellent coach and makes players better.
What he needs is support. His squad needs to evolve, and it is up to Mitchell to help make that happen.
Newcastle United have not been good enough in recent weeks, aside from the Liverpool game. In fact, there have been large parts of this season when Newcastle have not been good enough.
But Howe can change that. He is certainly capable, and deserves the opportunity to prove so.
This is a pivotal period, with Newcastle’s game against Leicester on Saturday followed by a Carabao Cup quarter-final tie with Brentford. They are two massive games at St James’ Park, and the Magpies’ season can start to look very different if they win both of them.
Fingers crossed they do, as Howe aims to relieve the pressure.
