Ever since his arrival at FC Barcelona, Frenkie de Jong has remained an important part of the first team. Since the last season, he has been one of the captains of the team, a fact that showcases his importance in the dressing room.
However, during this time, he also faced some difficult moments, when the Catalan club tried to push him out, mainly because of his high salary and their strained finances.
The midfielder is currently going through just such a period, as his performances have been well below the expected standards, and he is once again being strongly linked with a move away from Barcelona, especially since he has not yet agreed to sign a contract renewal.
In the last few weeks, his future at the Blaugrana club has become highly uncertain, and he has been linked with moves to several big clubs across Europe. However, according to Fichajes, another rather unexpected club has now joined the competition for his signature, Borussia Dortmund.
Frenkie was unable to undertake the pre-season and also was unavailable for the initial phase of the season because of his ankle injury. However, it has now been several weeks since he returned from his injury, but his performances have left a lot to be desired, and a section of the fans is clearly fed up with him.
Dortmund can take advantage of such a situation, as they want to bring more quality to their squad as they aspire for the Bundesliga and the UEFA Champions League titles. Dortmund’s style of play also perfectly suits De Jong, which can convince the Dutchman to join them if things become unbearable at Barcelona.
If this move actually takes place, this would be quite an unexpected turn in De Jong’s future. However, this is only the first time that the midfielder has been linked with Dortmund, and it remains to be seen how this story develops in the coming weeks and months.
