3 Monaco players Arsenal must be wary of in Champions League clash

A youthful Monaco side visits the Emirates on Wednesday night aiming to impress against one of Europe's best.

Significant links exist between the two clubs, most notably the shared experiences of Thierry Henry and Arsene Wenger, but the upcoming Champions League duel will be just their third meeting.

However, Mikel Arteta has already caught a glimpse of Adi Hutter's outfit first-hand. Monaco were involved in the 2023 Emirates Cup soon after the Austrian took the job.

Emboldened by their precocious stars, Monaco won't fear a depleted Gunners on Wednesday. Hutter as already said his team are in London to impose themselves on their hosts, but the Austrian is also well aware of the challenge that awaits.

Still, this is an exciting Monaco side laden with talent well worthy of keeping a close eye on. Here are three players Arsenal must be wary of on Wednesday night.

Vanderson

There were tenuous links with Tottenham in the summer, but the young Brazilian full-back remained in Ligue 1 for the start of the 2024/25 season and is improving by the week.

Vanderson is a dynamic operator at right-back, but a steely defensive operator, too. He leads the Monaco rankings with an average of 3.2 tackles and 1.6 interceptions per Champions League outing. As a result of sound technique, astute body positioning, and a handy burst of pace, Vanderson is a tough customer one-on-one.

In attack, the full-back can function effectively in the half-space and when tasked with overlapping. While he has a pair of assists to his name in this competition, he's the more conservative operator out of Monaco's Brazilian full-backs. Vanderson's positioning allows compatriot Caio Henrique to bomb on and regularly contribute in the final third - primarily as a crosser.

Vanderson has been a constant in Hutter's XI this term, proving himself to be a mightily reliable performer in all phases.

Monaco were not deterred by Camara's relegation with Metz last season as they snapped up the 20-year-old midfielder in the summer.

Camara has quickly established himself as a critical figure in Hutter's engine room, with the summer arrival forming an excellent dynamic with leader Denis Zakaria. The experienced Swiss international takes plenty of the build-up responsibility, while Camara is more of the destroyer ilk who can contribute in and around the opposition's box.

The 20-year-old has four Ligue 1 goal contributions this term, including a strike late on during Monaco's centenary game against Montpellier in September.

Camara has gone from strength to strength since that moment, with Hutter saying ahead of Wednesday's game that he's more than satisfied with what the young midfielder has produced thus far.

Camara's an excellent athlete laden with industry. His ability in transition shouldn't be underestimated either.

Elliesse Ben Seghir

Maghnes Akliouche and George Ilenikhena are also worthy of a mention, but Morocco's next leading light has been Monaco's standout star in attack this term.

19-year-old Ben Seghir has taken on a starring role amid a breakout campaign. He's long been touted for stardom having progressed through Monaco's academy, making his senior debut at the age of 17.

Ben Seghir has endured physical setbacks during his young career but doubtlessly looks at ease at the highest level. He's a silky playmaker who tends to function off the left but does most of his damage in central positions.

He's slight but explosive, with his distinct dribbling style bearing a notable resemblance to Neymar - Ben Seghir's idol.

The teenager's a talent who can hurt Arsenal on Wednesday night. A player boasting such swagger in possession is capable of compromising the Gunners' defensive structure through individual brilliance. The question is whether Monaco will be able to break the hosts' press regularly enough to allow Ben Seghir to wreak havoc.
