TNT Sports pundit Rio Ferdinand says Liverpool are currently “favourites” to win this season’s Champions League.
Arne Slot’s side made it six wins out of six in Europe this season with a 1-0 victory over Girona on Tuesday evening. Asked about the Reds’ chances of going all the way, Ferdinand replied:
“Form-wise right now, yes, Liverpool have to be favourites but nothing is handed out at this stage. Form-wise, come March and April time it could be very different to now. You have to be a bit patient.”

With other English clubs, such as Arsenal and Manchester City not fairing quite as well in the Champions League, and current holders Real Madrid also struggling, Slot’s men deserve to be considered among the frontrunners.
Ferdinand says Liverpool must show their staying power
The Reds are currently well clear at the top of the Champions League and Premier League table but Ferdinand warned the Merseysiders that they must maintain this sort of form when they reach the sharp end of the campaign:
“Liverpool definitely have the make-up and all the markings of a team that can be very successful this season. They just need to ensure they have the form physically and mentally at the back end of the season.”
Slot is keen for his player not to rest on their laurels
Despite beating Girona, Liverpool’s manager expressed displeasure at his team’s performance in the post-match interview. His disappointment was justified based on the xG of the two teams.
Girona picked up 1.21 on the night to the away side’s 1.84 according to Opta. It was still a deserved win but they have conceded a fair few chances over the last two games, if we also include the 3-3 draw versus Newcastle last week.
The Reds’ form this season has been based on not giving much away at the back and Slot is clearly mindful of the fact that his team don’t get too complacent. Next up for his side is a home league fixture against Fulham on Saturday.
