“Huge expectation…”–Paraguayan wonderkid Diego León breaks silence on Manchester United transfer

Paraguayan wonderkid Diego León has broken his silence on the increasing transfer interest from various clubs including Manchester United.

Diego León is a 17-year-old left-back who plays for Cerro Porteno in Paraguy and he has already attracted interest from clubs in Europe.

Manchester United have quickly become a favourite option for the defender, whose agents have reportedly been in talks with the Old Trafford club.

A potential deal worth £3.1 million has been discussed for the player who United would see as a future option at left wingback in Ruben Amorim’s side.

AcademyScoop has claimed that León ticks several important boxes in relation to his physical profile amid Amorim’s attempts to improve the squad’s athletic levels.

The highly-rated teenager does not turn 18 until April and so would be unable to complete any move to United until next summer.

Diego León breaks silence on Man Utd interest

Amid the transfer rumours surrounding León, he has addressed his situation and confirmed the interest from those at Old Trafford.

“I have a huge expectation to play the Libertadores 2025,” he explained when Deportes Uno asked about transfer rumours surrounding him.

“I’ve seen about Manchester United’s enquiry about me, but I don’t know anything. Everything is handled by my agent.”

The Paraguayan club’s vice-president Juan Carlos Pettengill has also spoken on the interest in the young player but claimed that there is nothing formal as things stand.

“If there were several surveys for some of our players, they asked about Diego León, our jewel but nothing formal,” Pettengill said,

“Diego León will play this semester at Cerro, he can’t leave before he turns 18 years old.”

United’s transfer approach changing

This deal will undoubtably remind many United fans of the summer move to sign Sekou Kone for around £1 million from Guidars FC.

Such low risk, high reward deals have been rare to see at United in recent years but they will be hoping these players can turn into first-team gems under Amorim.

Kone has been settling into life in Manchester and if León was to join next summer after turning 18, he would also be afforded that time to get used to a new life in a new country at such a young age.

But many fans will be impressed to see that the club are looking outside the box and trying to get talent before they break through and become £100 million assets.
